Pentagon Expands AI Portal with OpenAI and xAI Integration

The Department of Defense has added custom versions of ChatGPT and Grok to its GenAI.mil portal, signaling a deeper reliance on commercial frontier models.
The Pentagon has expanded its GenAI.mil secure portal to include custom versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, as TechCrunch first reported. These tools, branded as ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are available to 3 million civilian and military personnel. The Department of Defense reports that more than 1.7 million unique users have already onboarded to the portal, which previously offered Google Gemini.
Designed to avoid the data collection inherent in consumer products, the portal allows employees to use frontier AI models without transmitting sensitive government data through public channels. The Defense Department notes that ChatGPT Mil will focus on administrative tasks, logistics, planning, policy, and custom GPTs. In contrast, the Pentagon describes Grok for Government—integrated via SpaceX’s Starshield AI satellite network—as a tool to provide "immediate productivity gains" and allow the military to execute missions with greater precision in contexts ranging from supply chain management to market research analysis.
TechCrunch reports that the Pentagon has also secured deals with Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection AI. However, the portal notably excludes Anthropic’s Claude model. The Trump administration designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company refused to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to its tools, insisting instead on specific safety guardrails. Anthropic is currently challenging that designation in court.
