The Universal Plug: Anthropic's Bid to Give AI Agents a Physical Body

For the last year, the 'agentic' AI revolution has felt largely virtual. While models can manipulate data, they have remained trapped behind screens. That changes with the introduction of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS). As reported by Ars Technica, Anthropic is launching this standard to create a universal driver interface, allowing AI agents to control arbitrary physical devices without needing bespoke 'translator' programs for every connection.
Currently in a 'research preview' phase, Anthropic is targeting the scientific community to streamline complex experimental setups. The company claims MHS can shrink setup timelines from weeks or months down to mere hours or minutes. According to Anthropic Technical Staffer Alek Kemeny, the effort was inspired by neuroscientist Arco Bast at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, who developed an interface to coordinate cameras, microscopes, and lasers.
By pairing MHS with the Model Context Protocol, models like Claude can use natural language to 'reason' through physical tasks. Examples include autonomous laser calibration, intelligent microscope observation, and zero-shot robotics—such as commanding a robotic arm to pick up a can without specific prior training.

To enable this, Anthropic is using a standardized tagging system that encodes a device's physical constraints, such as weight and range, and safety limits. This allows models to operate unfamiliar hardware via a reference file.
Anthropic is currently collaborating with partners including Amazon Web Services (Strands Robots), Hugging Face (LeRobot), Raspberry Pi, Automata, and Universal Robots to develop safety evaluations. As Kemeny noted, accelerating the ability to test hypotheses is the key to condensing a century of scientific progress into a single decade.
