The new AI agent aims to automate 'busywork' through third-party integrations, though early testing reveals deep data harvesting from social accounts.

Meta has released Muse, its first dedicated AI-powered productivity tool designed to automate "busywork" such as trip planning, email management, and online shopping, as first reported by The Verge. According to the report, the agent operates via a cloud-based virtual computer to execute tasks across various platforms.

In hands-on testing conducted by The Verge, Muse demonstrated functional ROI in administrative tasks, successfully deleting thousands of promotional emails after being granted access to a Google account and completing a specific Amazon shopping order for workout apparel. The tool also supports the creation of "artifacts"—interactive documents and webpages—as well as AI-generated podcasts, images, and videos.

However, the tool's integration capabilities raise significant privacy concerns. The Verge reported that Muse can access granular user data through Instagram and Facebook API data that is not visible in the standard user interface. When questioned, Muse explicitly stated it retrieved a detailed list of the user's specific interests—including CrossFit, anime, and Florida wildlife—via API data, noting that the "Ad topics" menu available to users does not provide the same level of detail.

Meta states that Muse only exchanges the data necessary for third-party apps to function and does not share user information with advertisers. Despite these assurances, The Verge noted that the agent's ability to autonomously glean personal information, such as pulling a user's current location from an Amazon shipping address, creates an unnerving user experience.
