MDA Space Launches Venture Fund to Scale Domestic Defence Tech

Brampton-based MDA Space has introduced a strategic funding program called MDA Space LaunchPad Ventures to invest in Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) developing space and defence technologies, BetaKit reports.

According to BetaKit, the program aims to help startups create capabilities that align with the requirements of allied militaries and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). MDA CEO Mike Greenley stated in a news release that the initiative is intended to strengthen the domestic defence industrial base and ensure mission-critical technology is developed within Canada. MDA has identified 25 specific focus areas tied to sovereign priorities, including orbital signal-jamming, autonomous systems, air navigation, and satellites.

While MDA has not disclosed a specific dollar amount for the program, BetaKit notes that portfolio companies will receive capital, engineering expertise, and access to a government contract pipeline and MDA's defence subsidiary, 49North. This venture arm evolves from the original LaunchPad program established in 2018, which served as a collaboration point for academic groups and SMBs.

This move comes as the Government of Canada plans to invest billions of dollars to build a more robust defence industry and reduce reliance on the United States, BetaKit reports. Other established firms are pursuing similar paths; for example, Ottawa-based contractor Calian has launched Calian Ventures, a $100-million CAD platform designed to help firms validate and sell solutions to the CAF.
